After experiencing the impact that Wild at Heart had on my life, I had no doubts that I would be getting John and Stasi Eldredge’s book Captivating for my wife. She had heard about this exciting book and was ready to feel empowered as a Christian woman.
According to the Eldredge’s, every woman’s heart is driven by three desires. Throughout their lives, women want to be romanced, to play an irreplaceable role in a great adventure, and to unveil beauty.
However, the Eldredge’s warn that putting these desires over building a strong relationship with Christ can be damaging to a woman’s spirit. I felt that this was very important because I know how difficult it is to keep God at the front of my life, and I hope to help my wife avoid the same pitfalls.
With all that goes on in life, it is very hard to stay committed to my daily devotions. After reading Wild at Heart, I gained a new sense of who I was as a man and decided that I wanted to share this experience with my wife.
After talking with my wife, she told me that what she really found helpful in this book was the parts about helping women let go of past mistakes. The Eldredge’s mention that women sometimes let old wounds block their growing in Christ, and these heartaches can also get in the way of your current relationships with others.
Instead of putting the blame on the other party, John and Stasi encourage women to accept that what happened in the past made them stronger individuals and can help them learn from their mistakes.
Needless to say, it was a real eye-opening book, and I feel like I have a greater sense of my wife’s purpose after reading it. Although it is geared towards women, I felt it was important for me to read the book as well to better understand what my wife was facing.
It made me smile to know that my wife was reading such powerful stuff and realizing what a wonderful creation of God she is.
After reading this book, I was motivated to re-read Wild at Heart and during that time, my wife and I were able to share the things we learned from each book.
